In Landscape Rearticulated, Nikolova draws inspiration from poetry, literature, and a range of artistic influences, including Japanese Notan design, Matisse’s paper cuts, and Georgia O'Keeffe’s organic landscapes. The resulting photographic compositions, which have a sculptural quality, transcend the object itself, delving into the depth and thought of a painting.
By using geometric shapes and floating planes in her photogram silhouettes, Nikolova elevates her earlier series of landscapes to a higher level of abstraction. Working with a complex set of variables—temperature, humidity, and exposure timing— which affect the outcome is a vital part of the process as she believes it brings excitement and meaning to life.
Her work becomes a metaphor for embracing the unknown with fearlessness. She explores the intangible aspects of the landscape as she experiences them, recording what is beyond the camera’s ability to transcribe.
