Everything Is Liquid

'Everything Is Liquid' brings together Doug and Mike Starn’s ongoing exploration of time, change, and the natural world through two interrelated bodies of work: Mountainscapes (MTN) and Seascapes (SCP). In Mountainscapes, the Starns depict the slow-motion collision of tectonic plates, capturing forms that appear fixed yet are shaped by continual geological movement. These images reflect processes unfolding over vast timescales, in contrast to the brevity of human experience. To the Starns, mountains are living photographs—constantly evolving and quietly recording the impermanence of all things. Seascapes, turns to the ocean as a subject in perpetual motion. Drawing from their upbringing on the New Jersey coast, the Starns explore the sea as a metaphor for interconnection, time’s passage, and the fluid nature of photography itself. Each image freezes a moment in the sea’s continuous movement, emphasising both stasis and flow.
