Coral Woodbury’s painting explore the transience of memory and corporeality while celebrating the enduring power of human connection through remembrance. Using motifs like ashes and the imagery of palimpsests and books, her work bridges themes of absence and memory across time. The Broken Spine series explores the fragility of memory, time, and history. Translucent paint layers and obscured writing evoke the fading and fragmentation of the past, reflecting everything from parchment manuscripts to book bans. “These paintings began during my recovery from a fractured spine,” Woodbury explains. “Themes of brokenness and repair entered my work, connecting the book and body as metaphors.”
