Vanity Fair - 16 Books To Read This Month

In Vanity Fair's May 2025 book roundup, Painted Frames by Malick Sidibé is featured as a standout photography monograph. Sidibé, affectionately known as the 'Eye of Bamako', was a celebrated Malian photographer renowned for his black-and-white portraits capturing the vibrant youth culture of post-independent Mali.

Painted Frames showcases a unique collaboration from Sidibé's later career, where he partnered with local artisans to create frames using the traditional Malian sous-verre (reverse-glass) painting technique. These handscrafted frames compliment Sidibé's dynamic portraits, which were often cherished as initmate keepsakes and status symbols within families. The collection encapsulates the optimism, energy, and style of Mali during a transformative era.

For those interested in experiencing Sidibé's work firsthand, the exhibition Malick Sidibé: Regardez-moi is on view at Jack Shainman Gallery in New York City through May 31st.
