Bill Armstrong

Darshan further explores Armstrong’s interest in spiritual themes in Eastern thought, drawing on the concept of "darshan" which refers to the act of receiving a blessing through contemplation of a deity or sacred object. In this case, the sacred object is the square—a symbol of transcendence and stability embodying the balance of the four cardinal directions and elements. Armstrong destabilised the square through the blurring process, creating an oscillating visual effect. These images vibrate between being windows into an unknown space and mirrors reflecting the viewer’s inner thoughts. The spectral colours heighten this push and pull, inviting a contemplative experience.
